HIP-HOP PIONEER CHUCK D JOINS 1HOOD MEDIA FOR PEOPLE, POWER & POLITICS EVENT

What: In correlation with the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and as part of an initiative to educate and mobilize young voters, 1Hood Media CEO and co-founder Jasiri X hosts an exclusive and intimate conversation with rap legend Chuck D. The free event also features Rosa Clemente, an award-winning political commentator, hip-hop scholar and former vice presidential candidate. Attendants can ask questions, share information and continue conversations about how they can play an active role in the political system.

Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, known professionally as Chuck D, is an American rapper, best known as the leader and frontman of the hip hop group Public Enemy, which he co-founded in 1985 with Flavor Flav. 

His work with Public Enemy helped create politically and socially conscious hip hop music in the mid-1980s. The Source ranked him at No. 12 on its list of the Top 50 Hip-Hop Lyricists of All Time. Chuck D has been nominated for six Grammys throughout his career, and has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. 

Rosa Clemente is an award-winning organizer, speaker, political commentator, and former vice-presidential candidate. A leading voice of her generation, Clemente is frequently sought out for her insight on Afro-Latinx identity, Black and Latinx liberation movements, police violence, colonialism in Puerto Rico, hip-hop feminism, third-party politics and more. In 2008, Clemente made herstory when she became the first Afro-Latina to run for vice president of the United States on the Green Party ticket. She and her running mate, Cynthia McKinney are the only women of color ticket in U.S. presidential history.
